In July 2020, members of Tauranga’s diverse cultural communities were invited to take part in storytelling and design workshops where they shared their story of how they, or their whanau, came to live in New Zealand, along with their hopes and desires for the future of Tauranga or New Zealand/Aotearoa.

These stories formed the basis for the design of the hoe (paddle) that they created for the exhibition, currently on show at The Incubator Gallery. One side of the hoe tells the story of where their past and the other side, their hopes for the future.

Our workshop participants didn't have to be  artist – they need to be committed to sharing their stories.
