About the event
The Harikoa Collective brings together Amelia Taylor, Alejandro Larumbe, Donald Maurice, and Jesbery Hall in a programme inspired by South American musical traditions. At its centre is Gabriela Lena Frank’s Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout, a vivid work drawn from the landscapes and indigenous music of Peru. This is paired with Heitor Villa-Lobos’ String Quartet No. 1, reflecting the composer’s deep connection to Brazilian musical identity. Together, these works form a journey through South American musical legends, where classical forms meet folk traditions and storytelling takes centre stage.
The Harikoa Collective brings passion, precision, and storytelling to every performance. Violinists Amelia Taylor and Alejandro Larumbe lead the ensemble: Amelia, a University of Michigan graduate, has performed across the USA, Mexico, Italy, and New Zealand, is founder of RimuFest, and teaches students worldwide; Alejandro, an internationally active violinist, also holds a doctorate in orchestral conducting.
